It's a blizzard Auntie Em! A blizzard!
Feb. 16th, 2003 11:13 pmDragnet is a pretty cool show. That is all. In other news...Gangs of New York
I saw Gangs of New York yesterday. I'm not sure why it was nominated for best picture, I think it's the director's rep. Also, the kind of...need of the academy to honor movies about "important social topics". I also think I speak for everyone when I say that when I think of great Irishmen...I think of Martin Scorsese.
The gang warfare scenes were like something out of a middle ages nightmare. I'm not sure when people used hatchets and knives to fight...but it doesn't seem to be a very good method.
I went on-line to find out the real history of the area, which is of course, more interesting. It turns out the villain in the film was dead for about...seven years before the movie began. Nice attention to reality!
However, I'm a detail freak and one thing that bothered me through the whole film was the Butcher's false eye, or rather, convenient glass eye. Now, the beginning scene with the close-up of "eagle" in the eye was cool. However, there are many scenes in the film where it's obvious that he has two eyes. Why put this element in if you're not going to follow it? That just -- annoys me. I also noticed some strange editing choices, but then again, I'm a freak for details. Did anyone else notice the eye thing?
The other thing is everyone in the film was scum. It's one of those movies where you vote for the characters you think are less evil, but none of them are really "Good". And the women...well here's a great movie for strong female roles. From the prostitutes to...the other prostitutes...to the pick-pockets -- really, some great roles for women in this film. Especially Cameron Diaz's character. I really love when movies take a slightly strong women and then have her really happy to be bested by a man. Thanks Hollywood!
I think I ranted enough on the subject :)
Everyone stay safe out there!
