News from Thursday
Feb. 6th, 2003 11:47 pmI have the best dentist. Just had to say that. She actually takes the time to make sure you're numb and doesn't write off concerns. It wasn't a horrible experience, but I might have to get root canal, and that would be.
I got the lovely opportunity to feel half my left side go numb, not as bad as my friend who said she once had the whole side -- including her ear! -- go numb after too much novocaine. Tylenol is our friend.
And now the main event of the day -- the autopsy video. The video was by Stan Brakhage, a very well known avant-garde filmmaker. It was silent, but that only added to the...I don't know, there are no adjectives. That was probably the most graphic thing I've ever seen, by far. It it made HBO's autopsy show look like a kid's cartoon. Yet, it was really sad at the same time. While watching the film this thought came to mind: For XF fans out there, I now know why Mulder was never autopsied
After that, there was "John Carpenter's The Thing". Spoiled below.
John Carpenter's "The Thing". After the other movie, this was a cakewalk as far as violence goes. However, all I could think during the film was "Wow, XF really took a lot from this movie." Every time they showed the outside research center I wanted to scream "Icy Cape!" and the alien..oh the alien. Now, let me just say, it was one of the least logical things I've ever seen. The ones in "Ice" were much cooler.
These, were like shape shifters but we only ever saw them in the "ack! ick!" stage. Otherwise, they looked like humans until they literally exploded. I didn't even see how the alien could multiply itself since the original seemed to disappear. Very confusing. However, I love the old computers and technology. It's so outdated.
But I kept getting reminded of XF -- at one point I got so nostalgic from the use of flashlights and the entire plot about the alien ship under the ice (although the body controlling aliens on XF were much sleeker).
Still, it had some interesting effects and a few moments that were actually frightening. The most interesting thing, to me, is the paranoia in the film. Even the people controlled by the alien had no idea they were...or did they? That was never really made clear. Did the alien have control when your heart stopped beating? Quite confusing. I also think it's interesting that there is not one female character in the whole film. Women weren't even mentioned, this was a man's movie in a man's world. I was sort of annoyed by that. think, paradoxically, I would have liked it more had I not seen some of the XF versions

Date: 2003-02-06 08:56 pm (UTC)We totally watched Final Destination last night and did the same thing you did! First off, everyone in the movie is from XF (practically everyone) and Morgon and Wong wrote the thing. It was originally supposed to BE an episode! We compared everything to what it would have been had it been on the show. Way cool.
