Everyone read it, and give me your thoughts.
A sample of the article:
The fictional portrayal of terrorists trying to detonate a nuclear bomb in the heart of an American city was an obvious metaphor for 9/11 and its aftermath. The past season of "24," then, was a dramatic expression of the idea that America is responsible for the attacks this country experienced or may yet suffer.
The creators of "24" would no doubt deny such an accusation. They'd claim they were merely trying to tell a compelling story, one that was exciting and filled with twists. But barely more than a year after 3,000 people were incinerated by Islamic fanatics, writers don't create a narrative that denies that reality just for the sake of entertainment. One would as soon expect a Holocaust survivor to tell tales portraying the Nazis as innocent victims of a frame-up by Jews — just for the fun of spinning a good yarn."
Wow, I'm really really annoyed at this writer right now. I mean, yeah, just read it and tell me if I should be.
Like, it's fiction, and in the fictional universe...wait, I'm too annoyed to even try to talk about it right now. Maybe a little later.

Date: 2003-06-09 02:45 pm (UTC)Here's a quote I found particularly hilarious.
"Writers in Hollywood, like those anywhere, write not what they know but what they choose to believe."
Okay. Let's look at this.
Writers write what they choose to believe.
You, sir, are a writer.
You write what you want to believe.
You seem to have beliefs rooted in extreme conspiracy theories about a TV SHOW AND ITS WRITERS. OYYYYY.
Oops. That last part was just me. Doot doot doot.
Also?
"Reality may try to intrude on such ingrained beliefs, but it will encounter powerful resistance."
Aww. It's okay, honey. I know it's hard, having reality intrude on your ingrained beliefs. You're just lucky to have such a thick skull.
Because the 24 writers are terrorist lovers! They want to suck terrorists off!
Again I say, OYYYYY.

Reality? So overrated...of course, this guy also missed the point of the show where the CTU Agents and the President are the heroes of the day! I mean, since when does every single American have to be a good guy? How boring would *THAT* be? And, since he obviously didn't bother watching it, he wouldn't see that the terrorist group WAS Islamic and wanted to blow up things and the US was just helpign them along...evil like, to start a war and the fact that it had ANY resembalance to reality, well that's just so so so so so so sad. IT doesn't have words, really. But yes, INSANE theory, INSANE article, every part of it was insane. And it makes me want to write a letter.

Date: 2003-06-09 06:56 pm (UTC)I'm usually pretty sensitive to when a show/movie is trying to push an "agenda" or whatever. But I just haven't felt that with this show. Maybe because it's so over the top as not to be taken seriously? Maybe because my focus has been on the characters? I don't know.
Or maybe they really *are* trying to push this mindset and I've just totally missed it. What do I know? The few articles I've read from the writers have always insisted it's just a story. But then, is a story ever "just a story"?
Ouch. I'm thinking too much.

Date: 2003-06-10 09:21 pm (UTC)A story isn't ever just a story...but...a story isn't a hidden metaphor for conspiracy theories either. I mean, would this guy say that X-Files was suggesting that the US gov't was collaborating with aliens? Alien sympathizers!
The tone of that article just bugged me so much...I'd like to write a nasty letter in return.

Date: 2003-06-11 12:32 pm (UTC)This got me the most. " They'll just go on spinning tales of terrorist oilmen and their U.S. administration lackeys — of evil at the very heart of America. "
That article is Crap. I saw Dennis Haysbert interviewed once on the concern about the link between the recent terror attacks and the show's plot. I don't remember exactly what he said but it was something like, " It's just a Tv Show. We deal with terrorism all around the world and everyday. It's something that's in our lives and as horrible as it is, something we've learned to live with. It can't be ignored or outcasted. The show is for entertainment on something that is very real in our lives. " He made this statement on the news one night, I wanted to run down to where he broadcasted from and just simply shake his hand. That man really would make a good President. Rofl.
But seriously, he said it in a Nut Shell. It's something that is very real today. What are they going to do next? .. Discriminate any show that has to do with actual World Problems that either scares, or " insults " us as they put it. That writer can Bite Me. ;x
And there's Kiefer on the MCI commercial. E_n; Heh. I'm addin' you, BTW. :B

Date: 2003-06-11 04:47 pm (UTC)I agree, he'd make a great President! I wish that Palmer was real so I could vote for him. That's what I've been thinking most of the season - lol.
Exactly, what, are we going to accuse any show that has a certain plot of being sympathetic to terrorists? It just annoys me more than I can say. Since when does fiction even have to be slightly close to reality? I have a great idea for that guy, if he's insulted, TURN OFF THE TV. Yes, that's much easier than writing articles that make you sound insane.
Mmmm...MCI commercial...I just saw Stand By Me.
I added you back, btw :)
