Biggest fanfic pet peeve
May. 31st, 2004 05:02 pmAnd my biggest fic pet peeve. It's not even something that should be mentioned because you'd think when I talk about 24 there's certain things that no one would ever mess up. For instance...villain's names or how many kids Jack has. You would, however, be *wrong*
Which leads me to my biggest pet peeve right now. The one that will make me stop reading a story - any story. And that is...the new daughter/son.
Jack Bauer has only one daughter. I'll repeat that. Jack Bauer has only one daughter. To get this wrong is like giving Mulder another sister. You've violated canon and must be shot.
I thought, silly me, well only one person could ever start playing around with that...no, I found three stories and maybe more exist of this phantom daughter/son plague.
Now, I have no problem with AU's, if someone wanted to write a post-s1 story where Teri never died and gave birth to a son/daughter that's fine. Great even. I'd be very interested in reading it. I have no problem with people playing with canon.
To give Jack another daughter or son and make them older than Kim is insane. It's beyond insane. The man's barely over 40, people. For him to have a 25 or 26 year old child *facepalm*...no, I can't, it's too stupid.
So yes. One daughter. That's it. If someone wants to write that Teri story I talked about earlier that would still make the child *much* younger. In fact, the kid would be at this point 3+ years old. That's the only acceptable third child. You wanna pretend he had a kid with Kate? Okay, there's another possible third child. However, if I see one more story where some character I have never seen before starts calling Jack, "Dad"? Heads will roll.

Date: 2004-05-31 02:33 pm (UTC)I have never read those fics, but I wouldn't like it either. Not that I'm claiming I know oh-so-much about the show, because dude, I don't, and I probably write inaccuracies all the time. But.
Bad!fic like that needs to burn. The impossibilities, man. The impossibilities.
...
Now that I have rambled on about nothing, you can see how hypocritical I am because I like impossible things. *facepalm*

Date: 2004-05-31 02:47 pm (UTC)Oooh you must catch up. Seriously, excellent show for catching up. Yes, it needs to explode in a firey ball of death and never be shown ever again.
Yeah, but your impossible things are fun and not ENTIRELY impossible. A second daughter we've never seen? HIGHLY impossible. Love that icon, btw. Very very pretty icon.

Date: 2004-05-31 02:58 pm (UTC)And thanks. x3 I have no life outside of photoshop and writing/drawing. Speaking of which... need to get back to making my magazine for psychology. Fun times.

I think you're a good writer.

Date: 2004-05-31 03:10 pm (UTC)And <333 to you.
Hopefully I'll have more time to write after all of these terrible school projects are finished.

Date: 2004-05-31 02:53 pm (UTC)Also I'm not sure if I should read anything between seasons 2+3, if I ever want to try something in that time frame again. I'm getting intimidated by good writing very easily. ;)

See, the possibilty of discovering stories like this is what keeps me from exploring the world 24 fan fiction very often.

Date: 2004-05-31 02:50 pm (UTC)But sometimes you find a good story. I think - I don't know, pretty much I read almost anything 24 related ;)

Date: 2004-05-31 02:52 pm (UTC)And Jack could theoretically have a second child. If he adopted. That's the only way. And even then, I'd prefer he not have a second child. (Even though, yeah, I'm writing a fic where he does adopt a son, but that's because of circumstances and all that good shite. ;))
no subject
Date: 2004-05-31 02:56 pm (UTC)Right, if he adopted which makes sense and stuff. But still. BTW, what ever happened to the Kim/Adam? *curious*
no subject
Date: 2004-05-31 03:01 pm (UTC)And he adopts a cute little two-year-old boy, too. (Karina randomly decided one day that, yes, she has a son. And that, yes, she's also married. But the marriage was a business arrangement of sorts.) Gah! The Kim/Adam needs to be rewritten, just because canon fucked with it too much. Or I'll just go back and finish it where it is and call it AU. *shrug*
no subject
Date: 2004-05-31 03:09 pm (UTC)Go back and finish where it was - you started first - it wasn't AU when you started writing it. That's my theory at least.

Date: 2004-05-31 03:12 pm (UTC)Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, too.

Date: 2004-05-31 03:13 pm (UTC)It's bizarre, because never before have I heard of characters in any fandom suddenly being given children that they didn't have before. Adopting, yes, and in those cases you 'see' the adoption happening (so to speak) but I've never heard of a story before where the author has essentially said 'okay, in this world [character X] has a daughter called [character Y] and she's 15' or suchlike. Unless it's an AU... but generally then it's a really major AU (i.e. some characters are not dead, some other characters did not make life-altering decisions - or chose the other option) and the AU 'crosses over' with canon so that the canon characters react to the AU situation. This is in the Stargate fandom, of course, where such things are possible thanks to the words 'quantum mirror'.
Hey, maybe all these Jack-has-another-kid authors were inspired by the sudden appearance of Dawn in 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer'. ;)

Date: 2004-05-31 03:17 pm (UTC)I know! It's the most random thing I've ever seen. Like, people who decided that they really wanted him as their dad or something. It boggles my mind.
Yeah, giant AU, not just here, extra kiddies! Hee, good theory there.

Date: 2004-05-31 03:38 pm (UTC)'Cos dude - roomies are the funnest thing ever.
Like, people who decided that they really wanted him as their dad or something. It boggles my mind.
Having given this momentary thought, Jack's probably the last person I'd want as my dad. Partly because... woah, dude, Elektra Complex, but also because he'd know when you were lying and you'd end up being on the receiving end of some of his more minor information-gaining techniques...
"Uh, hey dad, I'm just going out for a party with some friends..."
"Which friends?"
"Uh, you know, my friend Heather and... um... some people she knows..."
"What people?"
"Just... just some people..."
"WHO ARE YOU PARTYING FOR!?"
Plus, the whole thing where being in any way related to him would significantly increase your chances of dying or suffering some other kind of large and traumatic mishap.
no subject
Date: 2004-05-31 04:15 pm (UTC)Yes. Yes. The suffering and the pain, although if you're his daughter your chances of living through the day increase sig.
However it's all obliterated by the HUGE Elektra Complex problem as you said. Which is an excellent argument for Jack not being your dad.

Date: 2004-05-31 11:42 pm (UTC)Exactly! No smoke without fire and so on. :)
Yes. Yes. The suffering and the pain, although if you're his daughter your chances of living through the day increase sig.
I suppose that's true... but would those odds be reduced by the fact that Jack already has Kim? Like... you're not the only one? Maybe all the good-luck life gets split between the two, so then both daughters have reduced odds of surviving.
However it's all obliterated by the HUGE Elektra Complex problem as you said. Which is an excellent argument for Jack not being your dad.
Awww. I feel like this is one of those American middle-school-style class talks. "And that is why Jack Bauer should not be my daddy." Of course that image is somewhat ruined by the subsequent one of one kid putting up their hand and going "uh... what's Elektra Complex?"
no subject
Date: 2004-05-31 03:26 pm (UTC)But, anyway, a new daughter/son does pretty much automatically equal M/Gary Sue. Otherwise there'd really be no purpose for one. You'd think they could at least deal in children that actually *could* exist - why not have Angela kidnapped or make up children for Tony and Michelle? Heck, you could even give Jack a niece. That's at least theoretically possible.
no subject
Date: 2004-05-31 03:33 pm (UTC)Hee, well it IS fanfiction.net but still, you'd think there was some level of sanity.
A niece! That's an excellent idea. And she could exist. But some random second daughter who was also around in s1 and 2 and we somehow missed? *facepalm*

Date: 2004-05-31 03:54 pm (UTC)*Will RESIST urge to make cougar comment... RESIST...*
Heck, with a niece they could give Aunt Carol some action. And now I'm goint to stop this idea before it goes any further.

Date: 2004-05-31 04:16 pm (UTC)Yes, probably when we start worrying about the sex lives of characters that have never ever been on screen it's time to stop thinking about it - lol.

Date: 2004-05-31 04:47 pm (UTC)But if it's on FF.net? Understandable. That's the fic dump for EVERY fandom. Even the ones with as little fic as 24.
